Food As Fuel

Wow so been awhile since i last blogged, but what better time than when it looks chilli outside on a Sunday morning. Sat writing this from my sofa having just inhaled scrambled egg and spinach, which kind of leads in nicely...

For the last few weeks I've noticed a huge difference in my "diet", in inverted commas because its the day to day lifestyle diet that i mean, not the weight loss kind. So yeah for the last month I've found myself eating far more than normal, my portion sizes are bigger, my appetite stronger and my pallet has dramatically changed. Having said all this, what I'm eating its greener, leaner, and healthier and my mind set and outlook on food has changed.

Im no longer seeing food as something that has to "work", or "go together". Ive begun to see food as just what it is in its basic form, fuel for the body!! Ive begun to look at it as nothing more than to keep me going, to keep me ticking over or to repair me after training. Ive started looking at food as more something that is used to power the body, its difficult to explain but i use to view food as needing to work, needing to look amazing and taste unreal. Don't get me wrong i still love my food but I've come to understand, its just energy. Wether it comes from scrambled egg and spinach or a gourmet tuna steak with all the trimmings-its the make up and build up rather than the dish itself.

This has led to me making some very strange meals in the kitchen, or strange to some people anyway. Ive felt a little like that experimental chef, Heston Blumenthal, just throwing combinations of things together. Ive been taking ingredients that i know are good for my body and just putting them together...and they've always worked. Ive put some images of my food at the bottom just to give you an idea, theres nothing there that is totally crazy but they're all things that you may look and think, erm they don't really go together. So this shot below, a bowl of chicken and tuna, with diced onions, and a bag of spinach..

As a result of this, or by total fluke, I've noticed I'm sleeping better, I'm getting up brighter, I'm training longer and harder and as a result I'm in the best physical shape I've been in. But I've not reached my end goal, so the game goes on. Ive found training is going much better recently and i feel I'm stripping fat quicker than it was, and I'm no pro but i think a lot of that is to do with what i put into my body. Alongside dishes that work for my body I've been taking just short of 4litres of water on board each gym day, and 3 litres on a rest day as well as doubling up on my usual supplements(Cod Liver Oil Capsules and Juice Plus Premium Capsules) which i think will also have played their part.

Below: an asparagus base topped with a mix of turkey mine, peppers, onions, and palma ham, with a little paprika. And then my 4 and a bit week training progress so far...

I guess the point of this post is kind of to highlight, food doesn't have to be this mass thought out affair that its sometimes made out to be, it can be just a bunch of what you need in your body, put together. Think cave man, chunk of meat, handful of berries, and some vegetation of some kind...ok doesn't need to be as basic as that but you get the idea.

Have an awesome sunday...
